Fresh Lemonade

If you’re prone to calcium containing kidney stones, consider drinking lemonade as a way to reduce your risk of stone formation. Lemon juice contains citrate, a substance that helps reduce the formation of calcium containing stones.

Ingredients

  • 2 large lemons
  • 8 cups of water

Directions

Squeeze 2 large lemons (1/2 cup lemon juice), into 8 cups of water. You can use a regular hand twist juicer or buy already squeezed lemon juice. Serve with ice cubes and a hint of mint for flavor. Drink throughout the day. You can add sugar or a sugar substitute if desired but try to limit your sugar to reduce your risk of stones. For more information on kidney stones see our fact sheet.
